At Bond and Des Voeux, sustainability is one of our top priorities. We are often asked by our clients of ways to donate and recycle; and a frequent question that arises is how mattresses are recycled, and who recycles them.

We have been following recycling for a number of years, and one of the challenges we have faced in Massachusetts is the various laws and regulations surrounding the recycling of mattresses. Above all, we have wanted to avoid the landfill. And so, we were excited when one of our clients recommended we meet up with HandUp.

HandUp “secures ‘hand-up investments’ to launch and operate businesses, with a goal of dedicating the majority of net profits to provide ‘hand-up services’ to those most vulnerable in our communities with a special focus on immigrants and refugees, in Massachusetts.” It was in their first business venture, Mattress Recycling & Upcycling, that we saw an opportunity for a strategic partnership to reduce the number of mattresses funneled through to landfills.

HandUp has provided the opportunity for Bond and Des Voeux clients to recycle their end-of-life mattresses or upcycle gently used mattresses and box springs at the HandUpcycling mattress shop, where they are cleaned and sanitized to meet or exceed state and local requirements and sold at a fraction of the retail price.
